Via São Vicente: after flying to Mindelo, take the ferry to Porto Novo (about 1 hour, several times a day). From Porto Novo, shared aluguer taxis or hire cars take you on to the valleys and coastal villages.

November to March is ideal for hiking: pleasant temperatures and lush green valleys after the rainy season. The island works all year; evenings in the high mountains can be cool – pack a light jacket.

Classics are the descent from the Cova crater into the Paul valley, the coastal hike from Ponta do Sol via Fontainhas to Cruzinha, and the Ribeira da Torre. Local guides also know the lesser-known paths – many tours can be requested right here.
